Aerobic Fitness


Aerobic fitness is physical exercise that intends to improve the oxygen system. Aerobic means “with oxygen”, and refers to the use of oxygen in the body’s metabolic or energy-generating process. Many types of exercise are aerobic, and by definition are performed at moderate levels of intensity for extended periods of time.

Aerobic fitness is massively related to health. The biggest cause of death in the UK is coronary heart disease (CHD). The risk factors for CHD include: Inactivity, high cholesterol levels, smoking, overweight, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Numerous studies have shown that inactivity is the most important factor responsible for CHD. It is twice as important as high cholesterol levels, and four times more important than high blood pressure. Consequently, exercise reduces the risk of dying from a heart attack and it is an effective method of rehabilitation in people who have suffered from a heart attack.
